How We Help Keep Your Child Safe in the Sun
As the weather warms up, outdoor play becomes an important and joyful part of your child’s day. Along with fresh air and active play, sun safety is a priority for us. We take steps to help protect children from harmful UV exposure while they enjoy time outside.
To support safe outdoor play, sunscreen is applied to all children before outdoor activities. If you prefer that your child not receive sunscreen, we respect your choice; however, written permission is required.
When We Apply Sunscreen
UV rays are strongest later in the morning and throughout the afternoon. To help protect children during peak sun exposure:
- Sunscreen is typically applied beginning after 9:00 AM
- Extra sun safety precautions are taken between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, when UV levels are highest
- Sunscreen is reapplied every 2–3 hours, as well as after water play
- Additional sunscreen is applied in the afternoon when children spend extended periods outdoors
Important Reminders
- Staff apply sunscreen for infants and preschool children to ensure proper coverage
- Kindergarten children are encouraged and supported as they begin learning to apply sunscreen independently
- Please do not send spray sunscreen. If your child requires a spray sunscreen or cannot use lotion sunscreen, an adult must apply it outdoors only. Please speak with your child’s teachers for arrangements
- Please send your child with a sun hat each day for outdoor play—it makes a big difference in protecting them from the sun
Working Together
Sun safety works best when we work together. By applying sunscreen before late arrivals and providing appropriate outdoor gear, you help us keep your child safe, comfortable, and ready to enjoy their day.
